Notables Project
Epanow Wampanoag is Notable.

Sachem of Gay Head

Epenow was a member of the Wampanoag tribe that lived on what is now Martha’s Vineyard. Capt. Edward Harlow kidnapped him and other Native Americans for slaves. After being held captive in England, he devised a plan to return to America. He fabricated that there was a gold mine on Martha’s Vineyard and his plan worked. Upon returning to America, he jumped off the ship and escaped. He later became a leader of the Native American resistance to the Pilgrim colonial settlement.
