Vera Ellen Wang, daughter of Chinese parents, Cheng Ching Wang, who owned a medicine company, and Florence Wu, who worked as a translator for the United Nations, was born in New York City on June 27, 1949. Vera has a younger brother named Kenneth.
Figure skating at the age of eight, training with pairs partner James Stuart in high school, and competing at the 1968 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Vera was featured in Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd in the January 9, 1968 issue. After failing to make the US Olympics team, Vera entered the fashion industry, however, Wang continues to enjoy skating, saying, "Skating is multidimensional".
Wang was educated at The Chapin School, the University of Paris and Sarah Lawrence College. Immediately upon her graduation from Sarah Lawrence, Vera was hired as the youngest editor of Vogue, where she stayed for seventeen years. In 1987, Vera joined Ralph Lauren for two years before resigning to become an independent bridal wear designer.
Vera married wealthy computer tech Arthur Becker in 1989, at the age of 40. He helped build up the Wang fashion line, and they continued to work together even after their divorce in 2012. Arthur also went into real estate investing.
