Research Notes

Ella's family were not found on any Canadian Census after 1871, a search was done online at both FamilySearch and Library and Archives Canada. Her father, Robert Morton Ward (abt.1844-abt.1873) is thought to have died about 1873. It is possible that Ella, her mother, Melinda (Terfry) Ward (abt.1843-), and brother, Mark Albert Ward (1872-), immigrated to the United States after Ella's father died. The records from the States shown below are possibly Ella's family.

An immigration record exists for an Ellen Ward who immigrated to the U.S. in 1880. She is from Nova Scotia and about the right age. A search for immigration records for the rest of the family was done online in FamilySearch but nothing was found.

  • "Massachusetts, Index to Boston Passenger Lists, 1848-1891," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVRM-S9P2 : 23 February 2021), Ellen Ward, 1880; citing Immigration, ship Carroll, NARA microfilm publication M265 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1969), roll #M265.

There is also an 1880 U.S. Census record that lists an N. Hartwell, the wife of a William Hartwell, Nellie E. Ward, stepdaughter, and a Mark Ward, son. The children and "N" were born in Canada and were the same ages as Ella Ward, her mother, Melinda (Terfry) Ward (abt.1843-), and brother, Mark Albert Ward (1872-). Missing on this census is someone matching Ella's sister, Alwitha Ward.

  • "United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MHX9-TZF : 19 February 2021), Nellie E Ward in household of William Hartwell, Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States; citing enumeration district ED 433, sheet 379B, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), FHL microfilm 1,254,543.

There is a Marriage Record for a Nellie Ward to George B. Tibbetts in Brockton, Massachusetts. In the marriage record Nellie's parents are recorded as John and Ella Ward, and her place of birth as Cambridge, Massachusetts.

  • "Massachusetts Marriages, 1841-1915," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N47D-DBH : 10 March 2021), George B Tibbetts and Nellie E Ward, 28 Apr 1895; citing Brockton, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States, State Archives, Boston; FHL microfilm 1,651,244.

When Nellie Ward Tibbets died in 1899 the Death record shows her parents as Rufus and Melinda Hartwell. Her place of birth was Nova Scotia. The Marriage record and this Death record record Nellie's mother's name as Ella Ward and Melinda Hartwell, strongly suggesting that this Nellie is actuallly Ella Ward. More Research to confirm is needed.

  • "Massachusetts Deaths, 1841-1915, 1921-1924," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N4FR-F6Y : 2 March 2021), Nellie E. Tibbetts Ward, 04 Aug 1899; citing Brockton, Massachusetts, p 156, State Archives, Boston; FHL microfilm 964,885.

There are a couple of unsourced family tree. The following is a link to a reliable tree published by the Yarmouth Herald.

Ward-177 and Ward-10159 appear to represent the same person because: These are obviously, duplicates. Same parents, same location. Ward-177 is part of the Trans Canada Orphan Trail and the profile for Ella will be released from training mode after we are done.

Thank you.
