Biography

Flag of Leicestershire (adopted 2021)
John Ward was born in Leicestershire, England.
Coat of arms for Ward in Leicester is Azure (blue), a cross adorned at the ends with flowers, between 4 golden rings[1]. The Ward family in Carlton Curlew (abbreviated to CC) was prosperous - having money, land and influence[2]
1506 - John [Johannes] Warde was born to John [Johannes] Warde (from Carlton Curlew) and his wife Alicia Allen from Markfield[1]. Markfield is 17 miles from CC. Source required for birth year.
Anecdotally had a brother Thomas Warde - source required
1531 (unconfirmed date) - married Elizabeth Ashby (daughter of Robert [Rob'ti] and Barbara Ashby[2] [3] from Quenby[1]. Quenby is about 10 miles from CC. Source required for date.
John and Elizabeth had the following children in date order[1]
1. Thomas Ward from CC (son and heir). Unsourced - b1528, d before 1618
2. George [Georgius] Ward from Frisby (presumably Frisby on the Weake 17 miles from CC). Unsourced - b1530
3. (possibly 1530) - William Ward from Burton Overy (1 mile from CC). William married Elizabeth Weston from CC[2]. William was a patron of the rectory in CC (having the right to recommend a member of the Anglican clergy for a vacant benefice, or to make such an appointment.) This advowson passed to his daughter Ann[2]. William died in 1582[2]
4. Robert Ward from Frisby. Unsourced b1531
5. (possibly 1539) John [Johannes] Ward (became the abbot's assistant) Leicester. Married xx Chamberleine from Newton (most likely Newton Harcourt which is 4 miles from CC)
Carlton Curlieu is a very small village in Leicestershire averaging 90 bodies or less. "John Ward paid the greatest amount of tax in the village in 1524 and 1545. In 1542 he bought an estate of 210 a. at Carlton, formerly part of the holding of Thomas Wigston, or possibly the freehold of the same estate"[4]. There's no direct proof this was our John, but with the number of people in the village, the name and dates make it likely. However, another document says that his 3rd son William held various estates in Carlton
1549 - died November 03, 1549 (43) - source required
1557 - wife Elizabeth's father Robert Ashby of Quenby died 24th august 1557[3]
1559 - wife Elizabeth died - source required
1598 - wife Elizabeth's mother Barbara died at the age of 105 (!)[3]

Research

Some records show first names in their latin form e.g. John becomes Johannes. These will be appended in [square brackets] where they have been used.
"in Com'" means "in the county of"
Mother is incorrectly named as "de Markfield", which actually just describes where she lived. Actually birth surname required.
Children and their spouses can be added. Head to [1] page 100 and [2] page 48 to see extended family links
Interesting read about this Johannes Ward at oachs.net[5] but it is not sourced.
"Johannes held the manor of Carlton Curlew in 1509. On Oct. 5 1543 there is a grant from William Allen of Wheston to Johannes Warde of Carlton Curlew and Elizabeth, his wife, of Carlton Curlew "Thomas Frisby, Robert Aston, bondsmen [native] belonging to the said Johannes with all their chattels and sequelae begotten and to be begotten and with all other profits to wit fisheries, meadows, ways, water and hutaries within the town and without."
On Jan. 4 1546, Johannes Warde commenced a suit against a Wilhelmus Ashby to recover land in Market Bosworth, in the tenure of Johannes Warde at the ancient rental of 20s.
In 1547 Johannes Warde paid a tax of 4s 4d for a windmill. On Nov. 3 1549, Nicolas Warcoop complains that Johannes Ward has appropriated his land, consisting of a messuage, a garden and an orchard situated near Carlton Curlew. On the same day Johannes Warde conveyed to Jacobus Barton a certain house and tenement situated in Market Bosworth for an annual rental of 20s."
