Biography

Hannah was born in 1655 to Thomas Ward and Margaret Shaw. She married Joseph Swett. Her death is recorded as august 14, 1701.

Elizabeth (Ward) Mason, widow of John Mason, was killed by a horse she was trying to catch on 21 May 1697, and her sister and brother-in-law, Hannah and Joseph Swett, took charge of her nine surviving children. [1]

Hannah Ward married Lt. Joseph Swett who was soon to be made Captain Swett. Joseph lived next door to Joseph Emon a cordwainer who had a small shoe shop on John Stanyon’s property (John was a Quaker [1]). Hannah’s sister Elizabeth met with misfortune when in 1697 she was killed while chasing down a horse. [2] Elizabeth had just lost her husband (John Mason) [3] so Hannah and Joseph became the guardians of the nine children in need of a home. Elizabeth Mason’s inventory included a list of debts. Included on this list was Lieutenant Joseph Swett “by assignment” for the disbursements as he was the attorney for John Mason, her husband, as well as for herself. Elizabeth Mason Jr was paid for caring for the children and Jonathan Sanborn was paid for goods and services. Joseph Swett was reimbursed for paying some debts owed by John Mason and both Joseph Emons and Thomas Philbrick are paid for shoes. [4]
