Laura Annis Ward was born on January 30, 1858 in Attala County. She was the third child of Samuel Green Ward and Matilda Hall . On the 1860 Federal Census, she is listed as Annis living with her parents in Bluff Springs in Attala County.
When Laura was about 13 years of age, her father Samuel died. A Guardian's Bond is found in the Attala County Chancery Court dated June 14, 1872. S. T. Oldham is appointed guardian of Laura and her sister, Savannah, and brother, William.
About 1879, Laura married her first cousin, Robert S Ward. Exact date is not known as no record has been located. Laura's father, Samuel and Robert's father, Oliver were brothers.
To Laura and Robert, 6 children are born:
On December 30, 1904, a Post Office was established at McAdams, MS. Laura was appointed as the first Postmistress. Her daughter, Eunice did much of the work. Laura served until September 29, 1906 when rural delivery was started and the Post Office discontinued.[1]
Laura died on November 18, 1946 and is buried at Sallis Cemetery in Attala County.
