Biography

Jane Ward was born around 1864 in Sandhurst, Victoria, Australia, the daughter of Jane Sherry and Martin Ward. Because her parents in 1864 were not yet married, her birth was unregistered. See Martin and Jane's profile bios for full details. Janes parents married on 31 March 1886 in Fitzroy, Melbourne.^[1]In 1915 one of her children confirmed his mother and her address, MAY STREET, EASTWOOD by citing Bendigo as the residence name when he enlisted in the 1st AIF: Title - Berry Edward Henry : POB Sydney NSW : POE Liverpool NSW : NOK M Berry Jane.^[2]

JAMES BERRY and JANE WARD married in Christ Church, Sydney on 12 Oct 1885, (see attached)^[3] and Registered the following children - some born in Melbourne and some born in Sydney -

Their house in MAY ST, EASTWOOD (around 1915) was named Bendigo. ^[4]

WARD - Area Zone F; Section Independent General G; Grave Number 282. (Cemetery Register incorrectly cites 19 Jan 1905) Co-interment A. BERRY; buried 22 Nov 1904, age 14 (ALBERT M. BERRY d.1904; NSW death)^[7][8]

Birth record for 1864 Victoria unable to be found (searched https://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/research-and-family-history/search-your-family-history on 15 November; used search terms Jane, Ward and 1864 to 1865). Is it possible this is a conflation of supposed sister [[Ward-11863|Jane Elizabeth Ward]] (1855–1868), for whom a death record was not able to be found? It seems unlikely that siblings living at the same time would have the same name? Spring-570 21:45, 14 November 2020 (UTC)

An update - a death for Jane Elizabeth Ward as mentioned above was found in 1856. 1868 death seems to refer to the below comment and is the death of Elizabeth.

12 Feb 2021 Could it be possible that Jane had a twin called Elizabeth and both of them were never registered at birth. Here is the death for an Elizabeth - Vic death registration #3598/1868, WARD, Given name(s): Elizabeth, Mother's name, Jane, Mother's family name at birth: SHERRY, Father's name: Martin, Place of birth: BEND, Place of death: - , Age at Death: 5.
