Biography

Jeffery is the first of the Warde family in the pedigree given in the Visitation of Norfolk. This gives his wife as Jane, daughter and heir of Edward Wright of Thwaite in Suffolk and Margaret, daughter of Edward Singleton of Mendlesham in Suffolk. Their children were Thomas and Mary. His death date is given as 13 October 1558, and Inquisitions Post Mortem were taken a few days later. These are not yet available online.

Robert III Ward had three sons: Henry Ward of Kirby Bedon, Jeffrey Ward of Broke and Thomas Ward of Homersfield.[1]

Geffrey Ward, gentleman, of Broke, Norfolk, married Jane, daughter of Edward Wright also Reve of Thwayte, Suffolk.[2]

They had two children - Thomas, who married Mary daughter of Richard Sponer of Sevyng, Norfolk, gent, and Mary who married Robert Turner.[2]

Geffrey Ward, gent, was buried in Broke in October 1558.[3]

Notes

The children listed above with no spouses in "The Visitations" could have been too young to have had them yet. The dates of birth are not shown, and the (exact) year of the visitation is unclear. It does, however, it shows that Geffrey Ward of Broke in com. Norfolk married Jane Wrighte (da. of Edward Wrighte al's Reve of Thwayte in com. Suff. and (unnamed) Daughter of Edmond Syngleton of Mydlesham in com. Suffolk, Esq).

On Ward/Warde/family

[1] From "The English Baronetage": "WARD, of Bexley, Norfolk. (EDWARD, Esquire,) Created Baronet, Dec. 19, 1660. His family has been long settled in Norfolk, for we find that Ward (a), married to Margaret Mortimer, and had issue by her John Ward, Esq; who was possessed of the manor of Kirby-Bedon, in Norfolk (b), in the year 1363; this John, married the daughter of John de Boscoe, and had issue John Ward, of Kirby, Esq; who married Catherine, daughter of Appleyard, of Dunston, in Norfolk, Esq; and had issue Robert Ward, of Kirby, Esq; who married Alice Kemp, of Giffing, in Norfolk, and had issue by her Robert Ward, of Kirby, Esq; who married the daughter of —Coppledick, Esq; and had issue by her Robert Ward, of Kirby, Esq; who married the daughter of (c) Sir Giles Capel, , of London, Knt. ancestor to the earl of Essex, and had by her issue Henry Ward, of Postwick, Esq; who married the daughter of William Ugge, of Pockthorpe, Esq; and had issue by her several children; the eldest son was Edward Ward, of Bexley, Esq;." (see more in "The English Baronetage"). I see no mention of Geffrey in this source document- just Robert, as the son of Robert Ward, of Kirby, Esq; and daughter of —Coppledick, Esq.)

THE WARD FAMILY

THE following authorities are given for the Ward Chart, which goes back to Osbert de Varde, 1130: Burton's "Monasticon," pp. 139-166; Whittaker's "Leeds" ; Dugdale's "Monasticon," Vol. V, P 139 ; Tanner's "Notitia."

In 1130 there were three brothers de Varde: Simon, Godewin and Osbert of Givendale, Yorkshire. Osbert had two sons, Richard and William de Varde of Givendale Living, 1150. William de Varde had son, Simon de Varde, who married Maude _____. Simon de Varde founded Escholst Priory the end of the Twelfth Century; he had two sons, John de Varde of Scotton and William de Varde of Givendale. William de Varde had sons: William of Capes and Simon (made Sir Simon 1260, by Henry III). Sir Simon had son, Sir Simon, knight and baronet, "A great Baron against the Scots;" and Sir Simon the second had two sons, Sir John, 1350, and Simon, "the Simon de Varde who married Margaret, a daughter of the House of Mortimer, Lords of Attilbury, County Norfolk, and ancestors of the Lords of Norfolk." Simon and Margaret de Varde's son John married Elena de Boost or de Bois; their son, John, 2d, married Katherine Applegard. Robert de Varde, son of John and Katherine Applegard de Varde, married Alice Kemp, had a son, Robert, 2d, who married a Copperdick ; and their son, Robert, 3d, married a daughter of Sir Giles Capel of London, ancestor of the Earls of Essex, and had three sons, Henry Warde of Kirby—Bedon, Jeffrey of Broke, and Thomas Warde of Homersfield, who married _____Hare, daughter of John Hare, D.C.L., of Homersfield, Norfolk.

Research Notes

As his father was born in 1484, one can infer Geffery was born after Sep 1498 and given the mother's birth in 1504 one can infer it was after Sep 1516.

Warde-69 and Warde-66 appear to represent the same person because: An obvious duplicate

I can see there is a full excerpt of the visitations of Norfolk on this page. I can't see the value of it here, given that the information is included on the relevant other profile pages. I've taken the relevant information into the Biography section - any objections if I delete the rest of the visitation excerpt?

It appears (with math) that Jeffrey should be born around 1475-ish (if you do 20 years as the rough age that each parent would have their child)- going by the year that Simon de Varde (Brother of John de Varde, who was born 1350) would have been born (as per Burton's Monasticon), which was after 1350... (x 6 generations - would be roughly 120ish years).

Being that Jeffrey was the 2nd son of Robert (3rd) and (unnamed- as per Burton's Monasticon) daughter of Giles Capel, the birth year could be off by 15 years (give or take with each generation).

But, looking at the attached mother (Capell-36) who is attached as spouse of Ward-4208 - it shows a birth year of 1504 for Capell-36 (mother of jeffrey), and the father is showing the birth year as 1484 (Ward-4208) - and that Ward is showing Jeffrey as a brother, when Jeffrey should be the son of that Robert Ward.

More here as well: [1]. Entry reads as: "Robert de Varde, son of John and Catherine Applegard de Varde, married Alice Kemp, had a son, Robert 2nd, who married a Copperdick; and their son, Robert 3rd, married a daughter of Sir Giles Capel of London, ancestor of The Earls of Essex, and had three sons, Henry Warde of Kirby-Bedon, Jeffrey of Broke, and Thomas Warde of Homersfield..." Name is spelled 'Geffery'. The name of his place of birth appears both as Brooke, and as Broke (as per The visitacion [i.e., visitation] of Norfolk, made and taken by William Hervey, Clarencieux King of Arms, anno 1563).
