Biography

Daughter of Edward Warde of Little Wrathinge, Suffolk. She was baptized 4 Nov 1593 in Little Wratting, Suffolk. She married on 30 Aug 1620 in St, Stephen, Ipswich, Suffolk, England to William Markham (who was buried 8 JUL 1624 in Woolverstone, Suffolk). Their son William Markham bp 3 MAY 1621 in Woolverstone, Suffolk immigrated to New England and is an ancestor of American President Rutherford B. Hayes.

Lydia (Ward) Markham mentioned in the Will of her father, Edward Warde:….. “ Edward Warde of Little Wratting, Suffolk, yeoman, will dtd 9 Jan 1620/1 prd 7 Mar 1620/1 records his family as wife Judith, sons Nathaniel, Edward and Thomas (executor), daughters Mary, Lydia, Susan and Rebecca. Mary married John Cutting of Watertown, Newbury and Charlestown, MA Susan married Robert Browne of Ipswich, Suffolk, Eng Rebecca married Walter Allen of Newbury, Watertown and Charlestown, Ma. Lydia married William [Marken] Markham at St. Stephen's, Ipswich in the same parish that her sister Mary was married and her sister Susan was buried. Willliam Markham was of Hadley, MA.”…..excerpted

Lydia ( Ward) Markham mentioned in the Will of her brother, Nathaniel Ward:…. “ Nathaniel Ward's will dtd 27 May 1664 mentions Daniel Allyn of Nashaway, Noys son to my sister [Mary] Cuttings daughter, Brown of Salem my Sister [Rebecca] Allyns daughter, Kinswoman Elizabeth Hawkes of Hadley, his wife Jane and William Markham. William Markham [son of Lydia], nephew, is executor of estate.”……excerpted

Not the Wife of William Browne

“Some internet trees show that Lydia Ward married William Browne but this is not correct. The family has been studied extensively. Edward Ward of Little Wratting, Suffolk, England married Judith Lukyn. They had nine children of which the baptism and / or marriages have been found for many. Lydia Ward baptized 4 Nov 1593 in Little Wratting, Suffolk, married on 30 Aug 1620 in St, Stephen, Ipswich, Suffolk, England to William Markham, who was buried 8 JUL 1624 in Woolverstone, Suffolk. Their son William Markham bp 3 MAY 1621 in Woolverstone, Suffolk immigrated to New England and is an ancestor of an american president. Lydia did not marry anyone named Browne. Susan Ward did indeed marry Robert Browne and they lived in Ipswich, Suffolk. When she referred to her brother in-law she was referring to her husband's brother not her sister's husband.”….

It appears that she was married to two men at the same time. She was having children with her first spouse, when she supposedly married her second spouse. Something is wrong.

Hello Brad: I am a Markham researcher, unrelated, special interests. Please just go ahead and do the merge. I am by no means new to this arena here. I am currently substantially updating this area, done a lot today, and a good deal to come in time ahead. Do the merge. You are, I might add, very much in the right place as such. Cheers - Bart.

Ward-1862 and Ward-1429 are not ready to be merged because: Birthdate/parents identical but separate marriages/children one year apart...more research into these marriages needed

Lydia died in 1610 at the age of about 14. She could not have married William Browne in 1621 and be the mother of Elizabeth Browne who was born in 1621.
