Biography

Samuel was born about 1637, but research done in 1989 by Raeola Ford Cooke shows that he first appears in the records of Branford in 1658, when he purchased a household there. He married Mary Carter in the year following; Cooke shows that he was a freeman in Branford in 1669, but then sold his house and lot in 1676, by which time he and Mary are shown with six children. The couple then apparently removed to Middletown, where "Sar. Samuel X Ward" witnessed a will in May of 1681.

Samuel passed away by 1688, when land "was let to the estate of Sargnt Samuel Ward sometime of Branford deceased"; this is probably the year of his death, as Cooke notes that he "most likely d 1688, his invt was taken 5 Mar 1688 or 1689, but not probated until 27 years later by his grandsons in Mdltn (lands in Branford & MdItn)".

Research notes

- Estimated year of birth is based on presumed approximate age at time of marriage. - 1659 birth of first (recorded) child (daughter Tabatha): "Connecticut Births and Christenings, 1649-1906," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F7WS-3M4 : 11 February 2018), Samuell Ward in entry for Tabatha Ward, 23 Oct 1659; citing ; FHL microfilm unknown. - 1662 birth of second (recorded) child (daughter Marie/Mary): "Connecticut Births and Christenings, 1649-1906," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F7WS-SLY : 11 February 2018), Samuell Ward in entry for Marie Ward, 20 Oct 1662; citing ; FHL microfilm unknown.

NEHGS, citing The American Genealogist (Vol. 12), et al. (see below), indicates that the name of the wife George Ward married by 1631, at Branford, is not known. Proof -- beyond an online family tree -- is needed of a marriage to Elizabeth Doggett, presently shown as Samuel Ward's mother.

While Samuel, of Branford, does appear likely to be in fact a son of George by the "by 1631" Branford marriage, if John was born George's son in England in 1624, the two must be the children of different mothers.

Re second marriage of George Ward in 1631. Elizabeth Doggett died in 1684 in Branford.

Ward-23700 and Ward-15399 appear to represent the same person because: As discussed... the Middletown info fills in a lot of blanks!
