1850 United States Federal Census [1]
At this time Major John appears to be living with his son Augustus M and Martha's family. Nancy is not with this family, the death date I have for her is 1859, so she should be living. John dies in 1850 after the census on 27 Sep.

Obituary of Major John Ward. [4]
"DIED
On the 17th last, at the residence of his son, Augustus M Ward, in Clarksville, Johnson Co., Major John Ward, aged 80 years.

Major Ward was born and reared in Tasewell County, Virginia; was, during the later part of the revolutionary war, a spy on the then Western frontier, and , in after years, represented his native country in the legislature of Virginia. In 1834, he was elected to the General Assembly of this State, where he served to the satisfaction of his constituents and with credit to himself. He was emphatically an honest man, and one who lived a long life, unstained by any wrong or dishonorable act, and died without an enemy in the world. He lived to see his children and grand children grow up around him, willing, as he had once filled, stations of trust and importance, and at last full of years and honors, has gone home to the Eternal Father. He died a christian; resignedly and calmly putting away the cup of life, from which he had taken so long and sweet a draught. Peace to his ashes, for thus has departed another relic of the revolution; another of the pioneers of Arkansas." [5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I am a Ward descendant & want to complete a DAR supplemental application through David Ward Sr. In order to complete this application, I've got to correct some information in David Ward's DAR record. He had 2 wives, Jane Cravens & (probably) Elinor Clancy. Most current (aka living) DAR members go back through David Ward's son William, but I do not. My line goes through Maj. John Ward (from 1st marriage) who m. Nancy Bowen. Only 2 DAR members have this line & one is a now-deceased aunt. Unknowingly, she got some things wrong about the Ward line. 1) no one, back when, knew that David Ward had 2 wives; his will names wife Elinor/Eleanor/Elenor 2) because of misinterpreting a statement in an old book, people assumed his wife was Elenor Cecil; she was not his wife. Elenor Cecil married Thomas Whitten Jr. (Thomas Whitten Jr. is a DAR patriot & his entry shows Elenor Cecil as his wife.) 3) people also assumed that John Ward & Nancy Bowen remained in Tazewell Co. VA & died there. They did not; they migrated to AR, where Nancy Bowen Ward died in 1835 (I found a newspaper death notice for her). Husband (widower) John Ward died in AR, as you point out in the obituary. 4) DAR records under David Ward claim that son, John Ward, was born during the Rev. War. If the obit is correct, he must have been born MUCH earlier. There is also a DAR patriot listing for John Ward who married Nancy Bowen & it says that John was born before 1759 & his Rev. War era service was as Clerk of Tazewell Co. Court! What I want to know is, where did you find the obituary for John Ward? That will be critical to my proof of what happened to them to correct DAR's record of the family. I have found no record of his service in the General Assembly in AR, although the obit mentions it. BTW, footnote links [4} & [5] do not work. Any help you can give is GREATLY appreciated! Sara Reuning in Bristol, TN

Question please: Does David Ward Sr. 1740-1827 have 2 sons who named a son Augustus M or Melvin? Major John appears to have a son Augustus and so does David Jr. Can someone please answer this? There really seems to be one, but whose son is he?

Thanks so much.
