Born in Ireland, about 1808, Sheldon came to Canada as a young man. He and wife Ann Heron, had property at Eglinton, York Township, along the present Eglinton Avenue west of Yonge Street in Toronto. In the City Directory of 1833 and 1837, he is listed as a Builder: Brick maker and Mason in York (Toronto). He was a partner with his brother in law John Snider, Brick Mason. (Information from York County 1837 Toronto & Home District Directory). He was also a City Councillor in the years 1844 and 1845--from History of City Councilmen, Toronto.
The 'Sheldon Ward House' at 115/117 Berkeley Street, was designated a Heritage Property by City Council on June 20, 1973. A lovely brick building, was built in 1844 and was home to Sheldon and his family for only one year before his accident. The Heritage site credits 1845, the year Sheldon died. It was built as a Residential property and was variously used by pre-confederation politicians, by his daughter and son in law Harriet and James Vance (in 1872),and later for businesses such as a synagogue, a movie company and since 2000 is now the home of Swadron Associates, Barristors and Solicitors.
He is buried at the Necropolis Cemetery, Eglinton, York, Ontario.
