Biography

Amos L. Ward was born about 1851 in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania to Levi S. Ward and Jane Bennett [1] [2] [3]. His obituary in 1900 listed his age as “about 50 years of age” which would place his birth year about 1850 [4]. Amos was the 4th child out of 9 children to Levi and Jane (Bennett) Ward. In 1856, Amos’ father purchased a farm known as “Limestone Stock Farm” and moved his family from Perry Township to Wayne Township in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania [5]. At the time of the 1860 census, Amos was 9 years old living on the family farm in Wayne Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania with his parents and 4 siblings, Minerva, Robert, William, and James [1]. Ten years later at the time of the 1870 census, the family was still living on the family farm in Wayne Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania [2]. Amos was 19 years of age and along with his parents he was living with 6 siblings, Robert, William, James, Mary, John, and Delila.

About 1875 Amos L. Ward married Rose Altha Friday most likely in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania [6] [7] . The assumption is that the couple were married prior to the birth of their 1st son Chauncey L. Ward on 31 August 1876. In1880, the couple were living in Wayne Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania along with their 2 sons, Chauncey and Oscar [3]. Amos occupation was listed as a teamster. In 1881, the couple had their 3rd and final child, Josie. According to Amos’ obituary he had been employed as a P. & W. railroad man [4]. Both of Amos' sons followed him in work on the railroad.

On 10 January 1900 at the age of about 50 years, Amos L. Ward died from heart disease at his home [4]. He was buried on 17 January 1900 in Slippery Rock Church Cemetery in Ellwood City, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania [8] [9]. Amos was preceded in death by his mother and 1 sister. He was survived by his father Levi S. Ward who would die a few months after Amos, his wife, his 3 children, Chauncey Ward, Oscar Ward, and Josie Ward, and 7 siblings.
