Biography

Louis was born in Canada East. He was born in Montreal in 1794. He is reported (secondary source) to have gone to Perry Township (Shiawassee County) Michigan around 1850, then (from primary sources:) to Sheffield (Addington County) then Portland Township then Kingston then (for many years) Loughborough Township (all three Frontenac County), where he died.

Louis Ward (1794-1879) had two or three wives:

wife (1) Mary ___ (b 1814) the mother of Minerva Jane b (1831), and

wife (2) Mary/Polly Woodcock (b 1817 or 1820) mother of Edward (b 1835), Nicholas (1836-1917), and Harriet (b 1836), Angeline (1840-1911), Marshal (b 1841), Mary (b 1843), Cynthia (b 1845), Joseph (b 1845), Amelia (b 1847), Lewis (b 1850), Catherine (b 1851).

We know that Mary Woodcock is the mother of Nicholas Ward (b ~1836) (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JD6P-41S) and Angeline Ward (b ~1840) (http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/70844157/person/44224094583). According to gwh715 Louis's children's births span 1831-1851.

Note that Polly is a nickname for Mary, so wives 2 and 3 could be the same. But in 1851, Mary is listed as age 38 (b ~1813) and in 1861, Polly is listed as age 41 (b ~1820), so they could be different.

Mary/Polly of the 1851-1861 census family was born in Portland Township according to the 1851 census or in Loughborough Township according to her death notice. The Woodcocks of Frontenac County were of Holland Dutch descent, as is the Mary/Polly of your family history, and they were American until 1783. Paul Woodcock-368, who may be Mary/Polly's father, was born in Portland Township in 1796.

Mary of 1851 and Polly of 1861 are both Methodist (vs. Louis's Roman Catholic), though 1851 has E. Methodist and 1861 has Wesleyan Methodist. (All the children are recorded as Methodist.)

wife (3) Annie __ the mother of Marshall (b 1846),

Sources

  • Death record Canada West census 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881
  • Only one Louis Ward-Mary Woodcock family in Loughborough Township shows up in 1851-1861 census records.
  • there's no doubt that Mary/Polly Woodcock married Louis/Lewis Ward; see

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JD6P-41S and http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/70844157/person/44224094583. This Mary/Polly was probably born in Portland Township, where Paul Woodcock was born and where Paul and Mary (Park) Woodcock probably produced children. (By 1851 they had moved next door to Loughborough Township. Mary/Polly's death notice has her born in that township.)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Lewis by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Lewis:
