Dana Seth Ward was born in Tennessee. Around 1920 the family (father: Alexander Pitzer Ward; mother: Sanna Black; sister: Jane; Aunt: Byrle) moved to California, first living at 3120 Granada, in San Diego according to the 1920 census. By 1930 the famliy had moved to the Bay Area, living at 142 Alvarado, in Berkeley according to the 1930 census. In the early 1930s he attended the University of California, Berkeley, joining the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. The 1940 census places at 2526 Piedmont Ave. in Berkeley (Grandpa Pit seems not to be living with them--he will go to Michigan in 1943 to care for Nina). By 1949, Dana married Barbara Novstrup and had moved to San Jose, living at 716 East Santa Clara according to the phone book. He is listed as a salesman for Better Brands Inc. He died Oct 10, 1964. In addition to working as a salesman, in the 1950s he owned El Gato bar in Los Gatos, managed a theater in Wawona, Yosemite National Park, managed an International House of Pancakes branch, and had various other jobs as a salesman. Barbara and Dana were divorced around 1953. They had two children, Dana and Carol Ann.
