Ebenezer Ware, eldest son of Nathaniel Ware and Esther Chickering, was born 22 Apr 1726 in Needham, Suffolk [Norfolk] County, Massachusetts.?[1] He grew up on the family's Rosemary Brook farm and became a farmer like his father. Until the age of 39, he was referred to in the records as Ebenezer Jr, to distinguish him from his aged grandfather.
He married [age 25] 7 Nov 1751 Esther Hunting,[2] daughter of Jonathan Hunting and Ruth Fisher,[3] who lived in that section of Needham which is now Wellesley, probably near present Forest and Seaver streets.
In October of 1753, Ebenezer [age 27] received from his father half of the Rosemary Brook farm, including the west end and half of the east end of his father's house and half of the land, barn, cattle and husbandry tools, per a certain obligation [probably that he provide for his parents in old age]. His younger brother Nathaniel, then still single, received the other half. In 1755 two division lines were drawn.[4]
Ebenezer's home, per the 1771 Needham Map[5] was west of Highland Avenue just north of Rosemary Street near the railroad tracks. He either inherited the house from his father or built it himself. In 1790 his farm was described as being 27 acres, bordering on the south by a road (Rosemary Street), west by the ministerial land (cemetery), north by his brother Nathaniel's land, northeast by Lt. Thomas Fuller's land and east by Jonathan Kingsbury's land.[6]
He was 50 when the Revolution began. He evidently did not serve. His son Jonathan and future sons-in-law did.
In 1790 [age 64] he sold his farm to Robert Fuller for £7[7] and moved north to the town of Hancock in the rocky hill country of Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, where his nephew Jason Ware with his Washburn in-laws had settled a few years earlier, about 1788 . Moving with Ebenezer or about that time were his married daughters Esther and Sarah, younger son Ebenezer Jr. and grandchildren Rhoda, Enoch and Sarah Ware, who were children of his eldest son Jonathan who remained in Needham.[8]
The Hancock area was granted in large tracts at an early date but was not actually settled until the 1760s. By the 1770s there were enough people to incorporate but the Revolutionary War delayed progress and the meetinghouse was not completed until the 1780s, thus the Wares were relatively early settlers. Ebenezer and Esther, both in their 60s, with their younger son Ebenezer Jr., in his early 20s, settled west of Davis Brook in the steep hills southwest of the town center. Next door to the north was the farm of son-in-law Lemuel Eaton, just down the hill to the east was nephew Jason Ware's farm and store, and about a mile to the south was the farm of son-in-law Moses Eaton.[9]
Ebenezer died in Hancock June 26, 1795,[10][11] at age 69.
Esther lived twelve more years, apparently with her son who was still a bachelor.[12]
She died in Hancock 28 Nov 1806.[13][14] at age 76.
His son Ebenezer Jr. and daughter Sarah Eaton remained in Hancock; his daughter Esther Eaton eventually moved to Dublin NH; and son Jonathan continued to live in Needham.
The homestead in Hancock eventually passed from son Ebenezer Jr. to his only son Ebenezer who became one of the most prominent men in town and built on the property one of the town's finest houses; it still stands today.[15]
