On the census image it appears that Emma reported being married for 10 years. She must have included her marriage to Charles S Whitney's father.

Robert and Emma were living at 21 East 3rd Street, Brooklyn, NY, a few doors from Emma's son and Robert's stepson, Charles S Whitley, and his family. Robert has an occupation that is challenging to read on the census image, it looks like "leapents" at Home. Emma and both her parents were born in New York.
