Biography

Lidia (___) Lewis is listed among the five persons for whom headrights were granted to Jon Lewis on 1 July 1653. The others included Jon. Lewis,Wm. Lewis, Edwd. Lewis, and Jon. Lewis, Junr.[1]

This leads many researchers to speculate that she was the the third wife of John Lews. However, there does not appear to be any reliable source for this claim and others point out that she also have been the wife of William Lewis.[2]

She reportedly died in 1680 near Gloucester, Virginia.[citation needed].

Research Notes

Disputed Origins

Liddea has long been linked with John Lewis on Ancestry trees, apparently solely based on the headright record cited above reflecting her emigration with the Lewis men to Virginia by 1653.

In "The Welsh Lineage of John Lewis" however, it's stated that no one has been able to ascertain exactly who Lidea was... it's suggested she's a second wife of John or wife to one of his sons.

Most sources list John Lewis as having had two wives: Johane Lewis and Catherine Philip. It has also been noted that John had a daughter named Letitia with his first wife, and that some records may have referred to her as Lidea.[3] So this may be John’s daughter, not wife. We simply cannot determine with certainty.

Either way, there is no evidence to suggest exactly who Lidea was or what her LNAB might have been. Somehow, this was tied back to the Warner family with whom the Lewis family is linked in the following generation. This profile was previously attached as a daughter to Thomas Warner and Elizabeth Southerton. No source was cited and there is no known evidence supporting this claim.

As there is no proof of parentage, please remove the surname of "Warner" from this profile. Having that surname just perpetuates more theories and speculation.

Thank you Wendy, I have taken care of that and cleaned up the profile a bit.

As part of the Southern Colonies project, I'm sorting through these Lewis profiles. Two things are assumed in this and other family trees:

1. Lidia was the wife of John Lewis.

2. Lidia's birth name was Warner and her parents were Thomas and Elizabeth (Sotherton) Warner.

We've not been able to find any proof or evidence of either of these claims. We know that Lidia was somehow related to John due to documents related to their arrival in Virginia. But there is nothing clear cut saying who she was, and no presented evidence that she was a Warner. For the marriage, we can leave it for now and mark it as uncertain, pending further research.

As to her origins, at the very least, we'd like to disconnect Lidia from these parents. We will plan to do that at the end of this month unless someone is able to add some evidence of this relationship. If you have something to include, please add to profile and post below.

Thank you!

As a few weeks have passed with no one offering proof or evidence that Lidia is tied to the Warner family, could we please disconnect her from these parents and siblings? I think she can stay tied to John Lewis with a disputed/unknown note.

I'm not understanding the Warner connection here. Could you please either give proof or remove? Thanks!

I agree that there's no solid evidence that Lidia was a Warner, or that she was even John's wife. I'm working with the Southern Colonies Project to review these profiles and figure out how to proceed.

Project managers, do you have any input on this before changes are made? Thanks.

Warner-4472 and Warner-100 appear to represent the same person because: Dates and link to John Lewis indicate same person. Person will need research and clarification once merged; may not be proper spouse of John Lewis (1594) but these profiles need merged regardless.

They may indeed be the same; but a couple in Norfolk, England would not have been having a child in Monmouthshire, Wales in 1610. So I doubt very much if she is attached to the right family.

That's another question I've been asking... even if it's her correct name and she was married to John, we have no evidence of what her LNAB was, let alone that she was from the family of origin to whom she's currently connected.

(It's unfortunate, I'd love a direct connection back into the Warner line, but I just don't think it's correct.)

What proof is there that this woman ever existed? Ditto regarding the two husbands to which she is attached. Thank you!

I'm responding to an old comment, but it may help just to have these notes, for myself or others.

The only evidence I have seen for Liddea is that a record which shows the Lewis family immigrating together includes: John (her current husband, Lewis-241), John's sons John & Edward, John's nephew William, and Liddea... who may be a wife, mother, daughter, or sister of any of the men. So I think she did exist but it's never been confirmed who she actually was.

Also I'm not sure which other husbands she was attached to, but the current (Lewis-241) is a well documented patriarch of a Colonial Virginia family. Unfortunately there are multiple profiles for him as well.

Since Liddea Warner is not one of the 240 Gateway Ancestors documented by Douglas Richardson in Magna Carta Ancestry, he is not within the scope of the Magna Carta Project. To have him included in the project, primary sources would be needed to support parent/child relationships until his trail connects to someone who is documented by Richardson (in either Magna Carta Ancestry or Royal Ancestry - the latter being preferred as it was published in 2013 & MCA was published in 2011).
