Biography

Mary or Mercy Warner was born in 1626 in England, the daughter of Andrew Warner and Mary Humphrey, who moved to Hartford in 1636.

She married (1) in Hartford, 22 January 1645/6, to John Steele, son of JOHN STEELE. She married (2) in late 1655 or early 1656 WILLIAM HILLS, as his 3rd wife. She died after February 1680[/1] (when she is named in her husband's will) in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut

They had five children: Abraham, Hannah Kilborn, Mary, Jonathan, & Hester. Jacobus included in his account of this family a listing of children who were treated on one day in 1658 by John Winthrop Junior, comprising children by all three of his wives, as well as children of his second and third wives by their first husbands. This list omits the daughter Susannah, who was in the original. The Winthrop medical records also contain a similar list from about a year earlier, and many other entries on this family, many, but not all, of which are incorporated in the present treatment.

These lists of children treated by Winthrop provide part of the evidence identifying the second and third wives of William Hills. In the probate of the estate of Richard Risley, on 7 December 1648, William Hills is required to post bond for the payment of legacies to the Risley children and to provide for their education, thus completing the identification of the second wife of William Hills. In the case of the third wife, we have the bequest in the will of ANDREW WARNER, on 18 June 1681, of ten shillings to "my daughter Hills"

Parents: Andrew Warner (1595 - 1684) and Mary Humfrey Warner (1602 - 1656)
Spouses: John Steele (1624 - ____) and William Hills (1607 - 1683)
Children:
  • Hannah Hills Kilborn (1658 - 1686)
  • Mary Hills (1661 - ____)
  • Jonathan "Lieut" Hills (1664 - 1727)
  • Hester Hills (1667 - 1680)*

Mercy appears in the will of her father Andrew Warner listed as "my daughter Hills" as does her mother (called or transcribed as "Easter")[1] This same source gives much additional information about her siblings as well.

Warner-4301 and Warner-118 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate records, cleansed and ready for merge.

Proposed merge with Mercy Warner-4301 should be resolved shortly, waiting on response from profile manager. Her profile is without sources and without facts other than birth/death year. It lists her death as 1646 which seems to be common with some trees on the internet that have confused Mercy Warner, wife of John Steele with Mary Boosey, wife of John's brother Samuel. Not that either woman died in 1646, that just seems to be a commonly repeated error.

And...got a response back confirming that these are indeed dups with some helpful info & sourcing I can add to Warner-118. Merge-resubmit on the way...

Warner-4782 and Warner-118 appear to represent the same person because: Warner-4782 is unsourced, and unconnected but the Hartford location and the death date seem to point to these being the same person.
