Biography

Betty Washington Lewis (20 June 1733 – 31 March 1797) was the younger sister of George Washington and the only sister to live to adulthood. She was the first daughter of Augustine Washington and Mary Ball Washington. She was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia.[1]

On 07 May 1750, Betty Washington was six weeks shy of her 17th birthday when she married Fielding Lewis, 25, a widower with two young children. [2] His first wife, Catherine, a cousin of George Washington's, died in childbirth along with the infant."[3]

"Colonel Fielding Lewis settled near Fredericksburg, Va.; was a merchant, burgess, vestryman, etc. He was twice married — first, in 1746, to Catherine Washington, a cousin of General George Washington; she died in February, 1750. His second wife was Betty, the sister of General George Washington, whom he married in 1750."[4] She died in 1797 while visiting her daughter, Betty Lewis Carter, at the Western View Plantation in Culpeper, Virginia, and is buried there. Are Lewis-25459 and Washington-230 the same person? Birth/death dates and locations match. There seems to be a discussion about Charles Saxon being her husband. Can the profile managers get this resolved?

Ladies, the content that was copied and pasted on the profile is a mystery to me. It's original 'orphaned' form was definitely written in the style of modernism, so I suspect it's 19th century, early 20th tops. (Nobody talks that way in our time).

That said, no matter where I looked to confirm or refute her, she did exist as Washington's sister, and Col. Fielding's second wife (including DAR). I have sourced, and sourced, and sourced. But really... it was just luck I surfed through. Sorry to help.

There are tons of "Son's of the American Revolution" applications that state Colonel Fielding Lewis had children with Betty Washington, but they say nothing of his marriage.

  • Also see Fielding Lewis' profile. It has extensive information from DAR. More info at (The Lewis Family), and extensive commentary online. He owned what's now Kenmore Plantation.

Hi Mary;

I didn't have anything to do with putting this profile together. I was just put on to keep an eye on it when the Presidents Project was beginning. If you have better information, I trust you to make changes. Would you like to be made manager? I am not really all that active in the project anymore as I have other commitments.
