Biography

Robert was the son of Richard Waterhouse of Hollins in Warley, who died about 1448. His mother was Richard's first wife, whose forename is unknown but she is said to be of the Maude family of Morton Banks, near Keighley.^[1]

Robert died in 1481. He left a will dated 20 July 1481 and proved 10 September 1481: "Robert Waterhouse of the parish of Halifax. I bequeath my body to be buried in the churchyard of Halifax. I leave to the Vicar of the aforesaid church my best beast for my mortuary. To Margaret Wood 2 s . To Thomas Horsfall one gown. Also I leave to the fabric of the belfry of Halifax Church I2 d . Residue of all my goods I place at the disposal of John Waterhouse my son and Johanna my wife, and make them executors. Witnesses, John Haldeworth, Richard Waterhouse, and William Doughty".^[2]

Research Notes

According to Foster's pedigree, Robert was Constable of Skircoat in 1455, and his son John was head of the Waterhouse family of New House in Skircoat. This is also mentioned in a footnote in Hunter's Familiae Minorum Gentium.^[3]
