Biography

Yorkie Waters is an Anzac who served in World War One.

Notes for EZEKIAL JOHN (YORKIE) WATERS:

He was called "Yorkie" for his cricket bowling and he was also called "Billy Falkner" after the aborigine who lived in the area. When he was a small boy he went to his uncle's saw mill and the men put black grease on him and sent him home to his mother to tell her he was "Billy Falkner", needless to say she was not very happy about the situation.

Ezekiel first of all lived on Bumble Hill where he had a young aborigine [Bumble] and his gin working for him. He married them as he said they could not live in sin. They sat while Ezekiel carried a stock whip in one hand and a bible in the other. Bumble wore a pair of boots for the first time in his life [at his wedding] and took them off as the last words of the ceremony were spoken

Bumble fell from a tree, he was 19 years old at the time, and later died as a result of the fall. The Walters family made him a coffin and Ezekiel read the service under the tree from which Bumble had fell, his wife later died from a fall as well. She had a very bad gash on the inside of a thigh. This led to blood poisoning.

Ezekiel had enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force during the first World War and was over seas for three years. He was in France and was one of many who were in the "Battle of the Somme". After returning home he made ten violins which were for his children and played at Bush dances at Wyong. Army records show that Ezekiel enlisted on 9 November 1916 and returned to Australia on 15 January 1919.

His service number was 4873 and he was a private in the 30th Battalion. The Violins made by Ezekiel were all named Kooee except for the one that his daughter Jillian Eugenia [nee Waters] Peterson owns, it is called Sadie.

Research notes

The above information was already written when this profile was adopted by me. Im not sure who wrote it. My connection is with the Stinsons, Elizabeth and William who travelled to Australia with Ezekial and Jane Waters, Yorkies Grandparents on the "Mandarin" from Belfast in 1838. If any blood relatives would like to manage this profile and others I would be so happy to hand over to you. Leisa Kelly-1255 04:37, 7 July 2015 (EDT)
