Biography

His grandfather James Waters (b 1818 Islington) was a Lithographer who owned his own company James Waters & Co in London at 5 Sambrook Court, City of London where he employed six men. His father John Alfred Waters (b 1850 Islington) was a Commercial Traveller in upholstery.

Charles was born in the Mar 1/4 1880 (Edmonton 3a 251). In 1881 Charles, age 1, was living with his father, his mother Kate, elder brother Alfred 5, sister Kate 7 and one servant at 3 Elms Crescent, Heworth, near York. By 1891 the whole family (plus three more children - Robert 4, Harry 3, and Lillian 1) have moved to Scotland and are living at 18 Regent's Place, Eastwood, Renfrewshire. His father John is 41 and a Commission Agent. From an inscription in a book of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, we still have, he was awarded for the term of 1890-91 First Prize for Arithmetic at Shawlands Academy, Glasgow. It shows his early aptitude for maths which led him on to his successful later career. By 1901, when Charles is 21, the family have moved back to England, and are living at 11 Blythswood Rd, Ilford, Essex. He is a Clerk in a Stock Broker's office.

Having worked his way up from office boy, beginning on six shillings a week, he became a Partner in a stockbroker firm in City of London called Beckhusen, Edwards and Waters, 20 Copthall Ave, EC2. The building is still there as at Feb 2007 (which is pretty amazing since most of the area has been redeveloped).

On 12 June 1906 he marries Gladys Stanley Murray at Christ Church, Woburn Sq, London (now demolished). (St Giles 1b 1123)

In 1911 he is 31, Stock Broker, living with his wife Gladys Stanley 26 and daughter Doris Evelyn 2 1/2 plus Mabel Kidd, Domestic Servant 15 at 50 Cotswold Rd, Westcliffe-on- Sea, Essex.

In WW1 he served as a Corporal in the Royal Engineers (Inland Waterways and Docks) Reg. No. 243816. He enlisted in February 1917 age 36 while living at 206 Victoria Ave, Southend-on-Sea (Short Service Attestation Form). It is likely he served in France. On 29 Nov 1918 he was discharged – the cause given as ‘Para 2 (a) Sickness’ (but no medical details given) and was awarded the Silver War Badge (WO329/2998) (erroneously often called the Silver Wound Badge!). We still have this plus his Victory Medal and British War Medal with his name, rank, regiment and number inscribed on the rims. There are also two lapel badges for the County Borough of Southend-on-Sea Police Reserve which he must have joined as a volunteer.

As a hobby he made pieces of furniture and we still have his beautiful Tudor-style oak tallboy. Maybe his interest in furniture came from his dad who was a salesman in furniture.

Charles and his family lived at Laburnam Villa, 69 Station Rd, Chingford, Essex where Doris was born in 1908, 50 Cotswold Rd, Westcliffe-on-Sea where Marjorie was born in 1912. Chester Rd at some point, then lastly Danbury House, Walton Rd, Thorpe Bay, Essex where Charles died, at only 56, in 1936. (His father John also died young at 68).
