Biography

Rebecca Waters, born about 1645, was the daughter of Lawrence Waters and Anne Linton.[1] Anderson states that the Waters family removed from Watertown, Massachusetts to Lancaster, Massachusetts by 1645. No birth record is found for Rebecca, so she may have been born in either Watertown or Lancaster.

Rebecca married on 4 January 1664 in Lancaster to Josiah Whitcomb,[2][3] son of John Whitcomb.[1][4][5] They had children, all born in Lancaster:

  1. Josiah, born and died 12 November 1665[2][4]
  2. Josiah, born 7 January 1666/7;[2] died 21 March 1718/9 (see research note);[3] married first to Mary _____ and second to Elizabeth _______[4]
  3. David, born 20 February 1668;[2] died intestate 11 April 1730; married Mary (Hayward) Fairbanks[4]
  4. Rebecca, born 12 November 1671;[2] married Jacob Houghton[4]
  5. Joanna, born 8 March 1674;[2] died 24 September 1717; married Peter Joslin[4]
  6. Hezekiah, born 14 or 16 September 1681;[2] died before 20 June 1732; married Hannah _____ and had eight children[4]
  7. Deborah, born 26 December 1683;[2] probably died young (not named in estate division)[4]
  8. Damaris, married Nathaniel Wilder[4]
  9. Mary, named in father's will[4]
  10. Abigail, born 13 March 1688;[2] married Josiah White[4]
  11. Eunice[4]

Rebecca died in 1726,[4][5] probably in Lancaster. She left a will dated 27 May 1720 and proved 15 April 1726 which names the following family members: son Hezekiah; daughters Rebecca Houghton, Mary Farnsworth, Joannah Joslin, Damaris Wilder, and Abigail White; grandchildren Eunice, Alice and Meriam Willard, daughters of Simon Willard, deceased. She named her son, Hezekiah as executor.[6]
