Ottawa Couple Mark Their Diamond Anniversary
Many telegrams, letters of congratulation and visits from friends and relatives were received yesterday (Jan.11,1956) by Mr. and Mrs. William Martin when they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a reception at their home. "Congratulations were received from Queen Elizabeth, Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent, Hon. George Drew and Mayor Charlotte Witton. Mr. and Mrs. Martin were married in 1896 at McLeod Street United Church and have resided in Ottawa most of their married life. For about the past 40 years Mrs. Martin has been a member of the Ladies Orange Benevolent Association at Billings Bridge and Mr. Martin has been a member of the Loyal Orange Lodge. "Reception" About 20 guests attended the reception. A large anniversary cake, red roses and crystal candelabra centered on the tea table. For the occasion Mrs. Martin wore a princess - style black crepe gown and corsage bouquet of red roses. She was presented with an arm bouquet of roses by her 19 grandchildren. Her two-year-old granddaughter, Wendy Hammell, made the presentation. Mr. and Mrs. Martin have 10 children : Leonard of Hemlock, Mich.; Lloyd and Frank of Saginaw, Mich.; Philip, Clarence and Eldon of Ottawa; Mrs. John Langley (Thelma), Mrs. James Murray (Betty), Mrs. Claude Hammell (Bernice) and Mrs. Asa Brownlee (Olive), all of Ottawa. Their residence of 50 years, was their family owned farm.. located less than half mile south of the Billings Bridge re the Bridge itself, in Gloucester Township, Carleton County of Ontario, Canada.
Mary passed away in 1959 (age 81) at her residence of 1395 Bank St. Ottawa
