Biography

There are no known records showing either the given or maiden name of John Watkins' wife. He was linked to Alice Lloyd as his wife, but no evidence has ever been provided for that relationship, or that she was a daughter of Edward Lloyd [John Watkins' step-father] as claimed, or that such a person existed.

John Watkins was named in the will of his father John Watkins, who wrote his will in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia on 20 February 1648. John {Sr.] also named his wife Frances.^[1]

John Waktins' widow Frances secondly married Edward Lloyd, as shown by the followig transactions:
On 2 August 1654 Edward Lloyd of Severn in Maryland, Gentleman, sold to James Frisby, 600 acres of land which John Watkins before his death by his last will and testament bequeathed to his wife Francis Watkins until his son John Watkins shall be at age 16 then said John to have 12 acres of cleared ground and at age 21 to have half the 600 acres and that if he die before age 21 the plantation to be divided as the rest of his goods. Edward Lloyd had intermarried with Francis, the widow of John Watkins, and with the consent of the said Francis my wife & John Watkins her son.

6 Aug. 1655 Francis Watkins, late wife of John Watkins of Virginia and now wife of Edward Lloyd of Maryland, to James Frisby the plantation of Elizabeth River, Virginia, formerly belonging to my late husband Watkins, and claims whether of thirds or dower belonging to me.

8 Mar. 1654 Edward Lloyd of Severn in Maryland and Edmund Bowman of Elizabeth River, Merchant, bond to James Frisby for 26,000 lbs. tobacco, conditioned on said Edward or Edmund do cause John Watkins, son in law [stepson] to said Edward Lloyd as soon as he shall be at full age to quit claim all his rights said John Watkins had or might have in such lands and if said John Watkins die before of full age the said land to be divided according the last will and testament of John Watkins, father of the said John Watkins.^[2]

Recorded at the same time in 1658 were:
Mr. Edward Lloyd assigneth one hundred acres of Land to his Son in Law John Watkins [step-son]
John Watkins demandeth one hundred acres of Land more in his own right.
Warrant to lay out for John Watkins two hundred acres 22d of February next.^[3]

John Watkins died in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, before 14 March 1682 when the administration of John Watkins was granted to John Watkins, Junr.^[4]
