Biography

John Watkins was in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia by 18 December 1635 as shown by the following deed:
John Wattkins to Richard Conquest, 250 acres on the south side of the River, the said 250 acres granted by patent 2 September 1624 to John Sibsey who on 18 January 1630 sold it to Capt. Thomas Willoughby who on 18 December 1635 sold it to said John Wattkins who on 23 September 1647 sold to said Richard Conquest.

John Watkins wrote his will in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia, on 20 February 1648 and it was probated on 31 October 1649. By name he mentioned his wife Frances and son John. Other children were not listed by name.[2]

John Waktins' widow Frances secondly married Edward Lloyd, as shown by the followig transactions:
On 2 August 1654 Edward Lloyd of Severn in Maryland, Gentleman, sold to James Frisby, 600 acres of land which John Watkins before his death by his last will and testament bequeathed to his wife Francis Watkins until his son John Watkins shall be at age 16 then said John to have 12 acres of cleared ground and at age 21 to have half the 600 acres and that if he die before age 21 the plantation to be divided as the rest of his goods. Edward Lloyd had intermarried with Francis, the widow of John Watkins, and with the consent of the said Francis my wife & John Watkins her son.

6 Aug. 1655 Francis Watkins, late wife of John Watkins of Virginia and now wife of Edward Lloyd of Maryland, to James Frisby the plantation of Elizabeth River, Virginia, formerly belonging to my late husband Watkins, and claims whether of thirds or dower belonging to me.

8 Mar. 1654 Edward Lloyd of Severn in Maryland and Edmund Bowman of Elizabeth River, Merchant, bond to James Frisby for 26,000 lbs. tobacco, conditioned on said Edward or Edmund do cause John Watkins, son in law [stepson] to said Edward Lloyd as soon as he shall be at full age to quit claim all his rights said John Watkins had or might have in such lands and if said John Watkins die before of full age the said land to be divided according the last will and testament of John Watkins, father of the said John Watkins.[3]
