Joseph Watkins was born in Hay, Brecknockshire, Wales.
Joseph was baptized 17 June 1831. He was the son of Joseph Watkins and Mary Evans of Hay, Breconshire.
[1]
He arrived in Nelson in 1852. Betty Bint writes in her research 1987: Joseph and Mary lived in Quail Valley (Tasman, New Zealand) and later retired to Wakefield. They have a very tall grave stone topped with an Angel. That angel could well be in reference to their daughter Lottie May who died in July 1879 and is buried in this churchyard. He was a nephew to William Evans (abt.1807-1896) who is also buried at St John's cemetery in Wakefield.
He was Interred at St. John's Cemetery, Edward Street, Wakefield. Find A Grave: Memorial #190822417

Thanks for your message. I know of Betty Bint's research and some of it is not totally accurate. She didn't have internet access for her research in the 1980s. And researching Papers Past there was no Mr Watkins arriving in 1852 in Nelson. I am quite sure he arrived on the John Phillips. Please let me know if you find any other suggestion. Obviously they might be always some mistakes and I am happy to change anything which is wrong.
