James Robert Watkins was born in Wake County, North Carolina on Feb. 1, 1869. He was known as Robert by our family members. Robert and Ophelia Holt was married in 1899 in Wake County, North Carolina. After their marriage they relocated to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. There he owned a general store. Its location was in the block across from the court house in Winston. It was torn down so that the first skyscraper (Wachovia Building) in Winston-Salem could be built in the area. His Wife Ophelia died at a young age leaving him with 3 small children. In the 1910 census it shows that his sister was living in the household. By June 11. 1911 Robert had remarried to Effie Spaugh. They had 3 more children. My aunt remembers Robert as being a good kind man and well liked. Robert died on June 10, 1952. He is buried in Moravian Salem Cemetery located in Old Salem, North Carolina. His son Hansel Watkins followed in his footsteps and also ran a general store in the North Liberty Street area. Personal family history remembered by his great granddaughter Janice Harper Robertson.
