... The death took place yesterday morning at Casterton of Mrs J. J. Cowland, (83). who arrived in Portland from Lancashire, England, some 70 years ago Since then she has resided in turn at Portland, Dartmoor and Casterton. As will be noted by her great age and long period of colonisation Mrs Cowland has labored successfully through the stirring times when Australia was being nursed in the cradle of her nationhood, and her future history was being moulded and shaped by such brave spirits as deceased Apart from being one of the historic links binding the old days with the new, she was a highly respected character, endeared by all, and her demise is regretted by a very large circle of friends. The deceased was twice married and leaves 8 surviving children they being, Fred (J.P.), and Walter Spencer (Dartmoor), Mrs A. Dowling, Mrs F. Dowling, Mrs J. J. White (Casterton), Mrs Geo. Greenham (Wando Vale), Mrs Gustin and Mrs Gerlinger (Portland). In addition there are several grand and great grand children. The body was conveyed to Dartmoor for the burial to-day, the religious rites of the Presbyterian Church being carried out at the graveside, with Mr W. J. Peden discharging the mortuary arrangements. Thus disappears from the golden landscape of life one of the most notable figures in the silent but successful pioneering history of Victoria,...
