MRS. J. WATSON.

(From Our Wai-iti Correspondent.)

(From "The Colonist," Feb. 26 1910)

One more of the fast diminishing band of the old pioneer settlers passed away this morning, in the person of Mrs Watson, relict of the late Mr Jacob Watson, at the age of 87. The late Mrs Watson, with her husband, came out in the ship Clifford, arriving in Nelson in 1842. They remained in Nelson for a few months, waiting for the New Zealand Company to open up land. As soon as land was available they removed to this district, then known as Upper Wakefield and by hard work and perseverance they "carved out a home for themselves and brought up a large family, 13 in number, eight of whom are still living. There are alive 26 grandchildren and 23 great-grand-childlren. Since the death of her husband. 21 years ago, the late Mrs Watson nas resided with' her daughter, Mrs T. Wadsworth at the old home, at Wai-iti. The deceased lady had been practically confined to her room for several months previous to her death. The remains are to be interred at St. John's Cemetery on Sunday next.
