Moral, independent, stubborn, strong work ethic, gentle with children and likes to expose children to nature. A gardener and loves animals. Addicted to his grandkids. Always wants to feed/nurture them, especially kids. Only talked to Sue about his war experiences 20 years after he returned. Politically motivated now. Enjoys the History channel. Staunch Republican.

Fought in WW2 and Korean War. Never got above sargeant. WW2 (34 mos) - drafted out of high school into Air Force, aerial gunner in far east, South Pacific. One of the first to occupy Japan when war ended. Later went to Phillipines.

Korean War (4 years) Reinlisted into the Army 72nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Infantry Div. Five Battle Stars, a Purple Heart (a shell hit near him while loading tanks). Comrades thought he wouldn't make it but he did. Continues to have steel in his hip.

Married and raised 3 children. Confirmed bachelor and Sue changed his mind. Retired as a carpenter/home builder. 1

Obituary

Vollie Idres Watson, 91 of Conway, Arkansas went to be with his Lord on Fri. May 15, 2015. He was born Mon. December 3, 1923 in Holland, Arkansas to the late Byron Augustus and Lilly Mae (Price) Watson. 1

Mr. Watson served in WWII in the Army Air Corps as a corporal in the 2nd Recon Squad as a Turrett Gunner, stationed in the Philippines during the Pacific Theater. He served again in the Korean War for the Army, where he fought on the frontlines in North Korea. He was awarded 2 Purple Hearts and several other honorary medals. 1

After his military service he farmed for several years. He then went into the Insurance Business and later became a Home Builder, following a family tradition and leaving a legacy that continues today through his sons Tom and Kevin Watson. 1

Mr. Watson was of the Baptist Faith and a member of the First Baptist Church of Vilonia. He loved gardening, hunting, fishing, Grandkids, raising bird dogs & playing cards. 1

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Everett Watson and wife Eunice and Byron A. Watson, Jr; sisters, Hazel Nipps, Maxine Ulmer & husband Jim; sister-in-law, Nell Watson; and brother-in-law, Doug Johnson. 1 leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 63 yrs Norma Sue (Gibbs) Watson of Conway, AR; daughter, Vickie (Watson) Marshall of Conway, AR; sons, Tom Watson (Cindy) of Conway, AR. and Kevin Watson (Michelle) of Conway, AR;. 1

Grandchildren, Brannon Watson, Ashley (Watson) Gardner (Jeremy), Jonathan Watson, Justin Watson and Jessica Watson; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Amelia Gardner; sisters, Jewell Johnson of Bossier City, LA, Virginia Cash (Walter) of Crossville, Alabama and Pauline Stevenson of Springdale, AR; sister-in-law Alzora Watson of Springfield, Missouri; brothers, Wayne Watson (Annette) of Vilonia, Dennis Watson (Pat) of Blanchard, Louisiana, Eugene Watson of Springdale, AR and Dwight Watson of Conway, AR; brother-in-law, Garland Nipps of Boston, Arkansas; and a host of other family and friends. 1

Visitation will be Mon. May 18, 2015, 6-8 PM at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home of Conway. Funeral service will be Tuesday May 19, 2015 at 3 PM in the funeral home chapel with Brother Steve Goode and Brother Sam Bailey officiating. Interment will follow in Crestlawn Memorial Park. 1
