Biography

Catherine Watson was born in about 1835 in St James, Middlesex, England. Her parents may have been Richard Watson and Jane.

• Research Note: The 1861 census has a sister, Ellen Watson, living with Catherine and her husband - there is no Ellen Watson who is a child of Richard & Jane - it is possible that this is therefore not the correct Catherine Watson - there are a couple of other Catherine Watsons who could be her.

• In 1841 Catherine Watson (age 5) lived at Winchester Street in Clerkenwell St James, Middlesex with her father Richd (40), mother Jane (35), and four siblings: George (10), Jane (8), Emily (3), and Francies (0).^[1]

• In 1851 Catherine Watson (age 15, House Maker) lived at Vittoria Place in Saint Pancras, Middlesex with her father Richard (47, Porter at Chandelier Wareham), mother Jane (45), and four siblings: Jane B (17, House Maker), Emily (13, House Maker), Frances (10), and Anne (7).^[2]

Catherine Watson married Augustus Edward Hirschfeld on 10 Jul 1853 at Old Church, Saint Pancras.^[3] The marriage was registered in St Pancras in the third quarter of the year.^[4]

Catherine and Augustus had ten children:

In 1861 Catherine ... (age 28, Artificial Florist) lived at Old Gloster Street in Shoreditch St Leonard, Middlesex with her husband Augustin (28, Jouneyman Tailor) and four children: Emily (6, Scholar), Augustin (5, Scholar), Walter (2), and [Arthur] (0), as well as her sister Ellen Watson (20, Artificial Florist).^[5]

In 1871 Catherine Hirschfield (age 37) lived in St James, Middlesex with her husband Augustus (39, Tailor) and five children: Emily (16), Walter (12), Albert (5), Florence (3), and Evelyn (0).^[6]

In 1881 Mrs Hirschfeld (age 46) lived at Blue Cross St in St Martin In The Fields, London with her husband Mr Hirschfeld (50, Greengrocer) and four children: Albert (16), Florence (13), Kate (11), and Edith (5).^[7]

Catherine's husband passed away in 1883: "The Will of Augustus Edward Hirschfeld late of 5 Blue-Cross-street Whitcomb-street St. Martin-in-the-Fields in the County of Middlesex who died 4 April 1883 at 5 Blue-Cross-street was proved at the Principal Registry by Catherine Hirschfeld of 5 Blue-Cross-street Widow the Relict the sole Executrix. Personal Estate £20."^[8]

In 1891 Catharine Hirschfield (age 50, Charwoman) lived in St Pancras, London with her daughter Edith L (15, Tailoress).^[9]

In 1901 Catherine Herschfield (age 64, Charwoman) lived in St Marylebone, Middlesex.^[10]

In 1911 Catherine Hurstfield (age 74, Old Age Pensioner) lived in Islington, London.^[11]

Catherine Hirschfeld passed away in 1928, aged 92 years. Her death was registered in Hendon, Middlesex in the first quarter of the year.^[12]
