  • Evidence of Relationship: A History of the Spann Family with Attached Hammond Connections, by Joseph Earle Steadman, Sr, Edward Spann Hammond, James H Hammond, Page 23:

The first wife of Henry Spann was Miss Mary Couch, daughter of Edward and Apsella (Watson) Couch, who was the mother of one Spann child. Edward Couch died intestate in 1796, but his estate was not finally settled until several years later. On 27 August 1813 a "legacy" was paid to Henry Spain (Spann) in the amount of $42.00 from the estate of Edward Couch--(Edgefield Courthouse :--File 38, Pack, 1335). The first wife was born about 1779/80 and died in 1802/3.
