How a Families Genealogy Can Be Skewed

I had been working on my family tree for about twelve years and had never noticed that some obvious pieces were missing from a book on this branch of my Scarborough family titled Southern Kith and Kin, A Record of My Children’s Ancestors, Vol 3, Major James Scarborough, His Ancestors, and Descendants, written by Jewel Davis Scarborough, that was published in 1957. Namely, the fact that my grandmother Birdie Watson had been married to two brothers, first to Byron Scarborough my grandfather, and to his brother Tilden Scarborough, also missing were my father and his siblings. Many of you may think that the omission was just that an omission, but I believe it was the work of a spiteful sister-in-law, Beulah Scarborough Rawlings. Who by the way is listed by name in the book's acknowledgments for helping with the research, whose husband, son, and his two wives are listed as are the spouses and children of other of Beulah’s brothers and sisters. How many other family histories have holes and gaps because someone didn’t like one of their relatives? Thankfully, if we keep searching oftentimes the gaps get filled in, thanks to the modern genealogy tools we now have.

My Two Grandfathers

Family lore is that Birdie was engaged to marry Tilden, they went to meet his family and when Birdie and Byron met it was love at first sight. They ran away together and got married, they had two children, Alice and Byron, then Byron the father died of an asthma attack. When Birdie jilted Tilden, he went to South America and taught school. Upon learning that Byron had died, he went to Birdie and they got married and also had two children,Mary and Betty.
