Biography

John was born about 1783.

In the 1841 census John (age 55), Ag lab, was in Nethershields, Glassford, Lanarkshire, Scotland.[1]

Name Sex Age Occupation Birth Place
John Watt M 55 Ag lab Lanarkshire, Scotland
Agness Watt F 50 Lanarkshire, Scotland
Robert Watt M 25 Lanarkshire, Scotland
Agness Watt F 14 Lanarkshire, Scotland
Janet Watt F 12 Lanarkshire, Scotland
Isabella Watt F 10 Lanarkshire, Scotland
Jean Scott F 15 Lanarkshire, Scotland
Gavin Marshell M 14 Lanarkshire, Scotland
Janet Sherrie F 6 Lanarkshire, Scotland

John and Agnes (mistakenly recorded as Janet) are in Kinlochaline, Morven, Argyllshire on the 1851 Census.[2]

John passed away between 1851 and 1855.

Notes

John seems to have died between 1851 and 1855. He is known to have died before the 1861 Census was taken and does not appear to be on the National Records of Scotland statutory register of deaths (which began in 1855), or on the Old Parish Records (which are by no means comprehensive).

The parents of John Watt, here given as Allan and Mary Naismith can't be verified. There was a John Watt, born on 30 Nov 1782 in East Kilbride whose father is named as Allan Watt, no mother listed. [3] The place of residence on the baptism record is 'Long Calderwood'. John's eldest son is named Allan, which is a good pointer to his father's name.

Other children of Allan Watt of Long Calderwood were:

Allan baptised 1772 at East Kilbride [4]

Agnes baptised in 1774, her father Allan is stated to be a farmer. [5]

Elizabeth baptised in 1780. [6]

No mother is named on any of the baptisms. The first of these children were born prior to the marriage of Allan Watt to Mary Naismith (1779). [7] Another possible mother for the four is Mary Neilson, married Allan Watt at East Kilbride in 1771. [8]

John Watt, son of Allan Watt born 1782, could also have been the John who married Jean Wardrop and had a son, Allan Watt in 1803 in East Kilbride. [9]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Watt-6424 and Watt-1415 appear to represent the same person because: Both have the same vitae, linked / married to the same spouse

Watt-5590 and Watt-1415 appear to represent the same person because: Same father and DOB, needs some research to establish his date/ place of death as these are at odds.
