Arthur Waugh, an English author, literary critic, publisher and father of novelists Evelyn Waugh and Alec Waugh, was born on 27 August 1866 in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England, United Kingdom. [1] His parents were Alexander Waugh, a wealthy country physician, and his wife, Annie Gosse Morgan, a 2nd cousin of English poet, author and critic Sir Edmund Gosse. Arthur was baptized on 7 Oct 1866 in the parish of Corsley, near Warminster, where his father was born, in Wiltshire, England.[2]
His siblings were Constance "Connie" Ethel Waugh (1870–1951), John "Alick" Alexander Waugh (1871–1900), Beatrice "Trissie" Helen Waugh (1872–1927) and Elspeth "Elsie" Alice Waugh (1875-1952).
Arthur was educated at Sherborne School, the private boarding school for boys, in Sherborne, Dorset, and at New College, Oxford University. [3]
Career
Arthur Waugh, an Edwardian man of letters, was the managing director and chairman of the historic publishing company, Chapman & Hall, Ltd., for almost 30 years, from 1902 to 1930. Chapman & Hall was highly esteemed as having been the publisher of writers like Charles Dickens, Thomas Carlyle and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
His published works include poetry (The Square Book of Animals), biographies (Alfred Lord Tennyson: A Study Of His Life And Work and Robert Browning), literary criticism (The New York Critic and The Daily Telegraph), histories (A Hundred Years in Publishing. Being the Story of Chapman & Hall, Ltd.) and his own autobiography, One Man's Road.[4]
Marriage
Arthur Waugh married Catherine "Kate" Charlotte Raban on 1 Oct 1893 in Christ Church, Weston-super-Mare, in the registration district of Axbridge, Somerset, England.[5]
Catherine was born on 2 April 1870 and baptized 12 June 1870 in what was then Chittagong, Bengal, India.[6] Her father was Henry Charles Biddulph Colton Raban, an Imperial Civil Service official during British rule in India,[7] and his wife Elizabeth Frances Cockburn (her 1st husband). Catherine was the great-granddaughter of Lord Cockburn, Henry Thomas Cockburn of Bonaly, a renowned Scottish lawyer, judge and literary figure.[8]
Children
Arthur and Catherine had two children, born in Hampstead, London, England, who inherited their father's literary talents:
Alexander Raban Waugh, "Alec Waugh," (1898–1981), novelist, married Barbara Annis Jacobs, Joan Chirnside, Virginia Louise Eggersen[9]
Evelyn Arthur St John Waugh, "Evelyn Waugh" (1903–1966), novelist, married Evelyn Florence Margaret Winifred Gardner, Laura Laetitia Gwendolen Evelyn Herbert[10]
