Merton married Marie L. Wright on 18 July 1948.[5][3]

For 2001 to 2009, Merton lived in Fort Edward, New York, United States.[2]
Merton died in March 1988.[4][3] He was buried at Union Cemetery, Fort Edward, Washington County, New York, USA.[3]
