John was born either about 1618, possibly in Sussex, England or 1627/8 maybe in Massachusetts or England. New Haven, New Haven, CT has been given as a birthplace. However, it was not settled by Englishmen untill 1638.[1] According to American Genealogist[2] the first record of John Webb was 'shows that he was released from his master William Parks of Roxbury on Jan 6, 1633/4. If he was eighteen he would have been born about 1615. John married Ann Bassett about 1640 in Hartford. They had 7 or 8 children.[3]
John was probably living in Hartford, CT 5 Feb. 1647/48 when his daughter Mary was born.[4] He acquired lot 42 as a 'new' settler in Hartford in 1648 on Trumbull Street.[5] 1649 was an interesting year for John. He was put under bonds to keep peace due to difficulties with one Ralph Keeler. In March that year, John recovered 4s for damages from Ralph Keeler. John failed to recover on slander later.[6] John was listed as a brazier in CT, presumably in Hartford on 11 Oct. 1649.[7]
On 26 Aug. 1650 John was apparently in Boston as his mark was on an acknowledgement of debt to one Edward Dare.[8] Apparently, John couldn't read and write. In 1651, John was living in Boston. That year his daughter, Susannah and son Richard died in Oct. 1651. And according to Boston Town Records, on 25 Nov. 1651 was admitted to inhabit the Towne for six. If he behaved for a longer time.[9] On 23 May 1653, John was in CT, most specifically Stamford where he signed as an original settler for Northampton (MA) to "settle in Northampton" and 3 Oct., 1653 was present at meeting and signed agreement to settle in Northampton the next spring (1654).[10] John had a two acre lot east side of Pleasant Street.[11]
After Ann passed away in 1667[12], John married Elizabeth Swift on 16 Oct. 1667 in Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA.[13]
He passed away on 19 May 1670 in Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA[14][15]
This John Webb had been associated as the son of Richard and Elizabeth (Gregory) Webb; sources/reasoning was not disclosed, but they would not have been his parents.
A report that immigrant "Richard Webb of Boston, Hartford, Norwalk and Stamford" was born at Dorsetshire, England, married Elizabeth Gregory, and had son John Webb (the "fifth child" among "eight children" born to the couple) was published as least as early as 1914 in Richard Henry Green, "William Webb, September 19, 1746-September 23, 1832."[16] The undocumented 1914 reporting was flawed in many respects.
John Webb of Northampton is reported born "about 1615, England."[17] He was born too early and was probably married to Ann Bassett before Richard Webb married Elizabeth.
Elizabeth Gregory Webb/Gregory-177, died 24 January 1680 is certainly otherwise Elizabeth (______) (Grant) Webb, whose death was recorded Norwalk, 24 January 1680[/1].[18] She was married first, about 1635, to Seth Grant, who died Hartford before 4 March 1646/7 (date of inventory).[19]
In 1954, quoting from "Judd ms,"[20] authors of "John Webb of Northampton," included a claim that John Webb "may have been a brother or cousin of Richard Webb of Stamford."[21]
Richard Webb of Stamford is a different person than Richard Webb of Cambridge, Hartford and Norwalk and also a different person than Richard Webb of Weymouth.[22] In his article about the man who migrated early to Cambridge, Robert Charles Anderson reported no information that would suggest a close family association existed between the Cambridge immigrant and the other men,[23] who died Norwalk, July 1665.[24]

Webb-15628 and Webb-240 appear to represent the same person because: Ann Bassett-49 died 26 Aug 1667, John Webb married next Elizabeth Swift 1640-1691 who married Robert Danks d23 Feb 1692, after John Webb died 1670. Donald Lines Jacobus, American Genealogist Records,
Anderson's Great Migration, John Webb 1615, states connection will not be made in his records, however, information supported by Jacobus.
Jeremiah Webb-5072 b 12 Jul 1668-5 Mar 1734 son of Elizabeth Swift and John Webb
I went down quite a rabbit hole before realizing the Richard Webb I was looking at was of Norwalk & not Stamford. And there's the question still of whether Elizabeth Gregory even married Richard Webb of Norwalk, etc. etc.
Might be safe to sever the connection btwn this John Webb Sr profile and the two parents as to not confuse folks (such as myself) who look @ the parentage on first glance and not notice all the disputes in the profile body. It was even discussed back in 2020 by one of the profile managers (Walter H).
Webb-2752 and Webb-2769 appear to represent the same person because: It appears on here that this is the same data, uploaded from a gedcom? However, I have variations in our family files, ours reads like this: John Webb, b. 1628 in New Haven, CT, d. 19-May-1670 in Northampton, MA. He married Anna Bassett, married 1640.
Children:
i Sarah Webb b. 1646, d. 29-Feb-1704.
ii Mary Webb b. 5-Feb-1648, d. 14-Mar-1676.
2275. Anna Bassett, b. 1618 in New Haven, CT, d. 26-Aug-1667 in Northampton, MA.
And, I created a profile for Anna (Bassett) Webb, as they'd had no children for her father (john) and Margery Holland.
