Biography

John was a Friend (Quaker)

John was the son of Richard Webb and Mary Heyward, and was born in Gloucestershire on 23 August 1661.[1][2][3]

He married Ann Harrod (the surname in the Quaker record is hard to decipher) at Gloucester, Gloucestershire on 18 August 1691. Both were described as of the city of Gloucester. His parents and his brother James are listed as being present.[4]

He and his family emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1700, along with his brother Richard and his sister-in-law Elizabeth and their families.[5] A certificate of removal from the Quarterly Meeting of Gloucester, England was dated 27 August (6th month) 1700 and received on 31 January (11th month) 1700/1 - 1701 in modern reckoning.[6]

John's death was recorded by Philadelphia Monthly Meeting and Nottingham and Little Britain Monthly Meeting, Pennsylvania as having occurred on 13 December (10th month) 1711. His occupation was recorded as tailor.[7][8]

From Rootsweb...

John Webb Sr. came to the Pennsylvania Colony on the ship "Canterbury" in company with William Penn on his second trip to America in 1699 [this should be 1700 - see Research Notes]. He had a child, John Webb, Jr., born abt 1695 in Gloucester, England, d. 10/18/1774, Berks County, PA, (now Reading, PA) John Webb Jr. married Mary Boone, 9/13/1720 in Gwynels Meeting House. They were Quakers. She was the daughter of George Boone III and Mary Maugridge. Mary Boone was born 9/23/1699 in Devonshire, England and died 1/16/1774 in Berks County, PA.

Their children are:

Research Notes

Date of Emigration to Pennsylvania

A previous version of this profile said, citing Rootsweb, that John and his family sailed to Pennsylvania "on the ship "Canterbury" in company with William Penn on his second trip to America in 1699." The passenger list for the 1699 voyage of the Canterbury has not survived, and John Penn is not listed on the reconstructed list on Wikipedia. Quaker records make it clear that he left England in 1700 - see the main section of the biography. That is when Penn's second voyage to Pennsylvania on the Canterbury took place.[9]

Miscellaneous

John was the paternal sixth great grandfather of Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Please modify anything that is incorrect. I see this profile's bio could use some work also. I will try to get to it, maybe the other managers could take a stab at it also?

John Webb is currently in the Valiant Sixty category. The Valiant Sixty were a set of very early and active Quakers. His name does not feature in the lists of the Valiant Sixty, and he was born too late to be one of them. I am proposing to remove him from the category.
