Biography

Mildred was born when her parents were living in Saint John and her father was working at McAvity's Co on Rothesay Avenue. Whem Mildred reached school age they had moved to Norton to a house next to the school. She attended Norton Superior School, and graduated from High School. Mildred was a pencil and paper artist, she drew pictures of horses and you could almost see the muscles moving. She had a great talent and loved to draw animals, especially horses. Her sisters and brothers could hear her recite every nursery rhyme written and she would sing all the childrens songs. Her father was a wounded WW I veteran who had shrapnel in his leg when he was in France and suffered the rest of his life from the damage. He found a job with the CN Rairroad in Norton and was able to look after his family. She had 2 brothers, John and Christopher, three more sisters, Florence, Pearl and Phyllis. When WW2 was declared both brothers enlisted in the army and were very soon sent to Singapore. De to very bad military management their units were surredered to the Japanese invaders and John was held in a notorious POW camp. Chritopher managed to escape and hide in the wooded hills for alost a month before they caught him. He had a bullet in his arm when he was put in the same POW camp as his brother. They stayed there for 3 years until the US Army captured the camp and released them. They were both hospitalized for years. In time they both healed from the effects and both of them got married and raised children. Their father lived long enough to hear that they were free but did not get to see them. before his hear gave out nd he died. When all of the other children were married and living all over NB, Her mother Mabel and Mildred still lived together in the house by the school, with the wood fired stove and the outdoor plumbing, until they moved to an apartment in York Manor a little way fom their old house. Mabel remarrie, James Powell, a lumber business man from Cedar Camp, near Sussex and Mildred lived alone for a while. Then Jim Powell died and she moved back with Mildred. Mabel died on date and is buried in Riverbank cemetary with the family. Mldred died ondate and was laid to rest with her family.
