Biography

John was a Friend (Quaker)
Cross of St George
John Webb Jr. was born in England.

John was a School Teacher and it was he that preserved the family births and deaths and passed down to his nephew John according to his fifth Great Grandfather to Lillian Porter and Loretta Lynn and her siblings (Direct line).

John was born about 1694. He passed away in 1774.

Both John & Mary Boone Webb are most likely buried in the Exeter Friend's Burying Ground. There are no stones or markers there covering the old graves. By 1817, the grounds were filled with the remains of Boones, Ellises, Hughes, Lees, Lincolns & Webbs.

As no additional land could be purchased, the Friends hauled in additional soil and covered the old portion of the burying ground with 4 feet of topsoil and started a second tier.

All of the records here were taken from the handwritten copies made by the eminent Quaker historian & genealogist, Gilbert Cope (bn 1840) from original papers no longer available to the public. The Cope transcriptions are in the Library of the Pennsylvania Historical Society, 1300 Locust St., Phila.

The Web Family History. "In some way their courtship (John Webb and Mary Boone) did not comply with the regulations of the Society of Friends (Quakers), for on 26 July 1720 in Gwybedd Meeting, Mary Boone's father George, openly acknowledged his fault in allowing John Webb to "keep company with his daughter in order to marry, contrary to ye established order. After their marriage John and Mary probably settled in Exeter township, as their affairs continue to be recorded in Gwynedd and Exeter Meetings.

John Webb was the son of John Webbe who emigrated in 1699 to Pennsylvania Colony on the ship "Canterbury" in company with William Penn who was making his second visit. John Webbe Sr. was a son of Robert Webb. The Webb history goes back to 1430 when William Richmond married Alice Webb, a daughter and only heir of Thomas Webb of Draycott, country Wilts. (The Web Family History, by Donald E. Webb.)

John and Mary had the following children:

  1. John Webb (1720/21, he married Rachel Willits),
  2. George Webb (1723),
  3. Mary Webb (1726/27, married Mordecai Lincoln or John Sterrat [last marriage is per Exeter MM]),
  4. Sarah Webb (1729),
  5. Benjamin Webb (1732),
  6. Joseph Webb (1735),
  7. James Webb (1737/38, married Mary Matthews, daughter of Robert Matthews),

Research Notes

I've posted this particular source (Exeter MM Quaker records) down here as the source pages show the following for "Mary Webb, child of John Webb and Mary Boone, died in Berks, Pennsylvania" and it also shows the children and grandchildren of John &Mary (Boone) Webb and some of their important information for the family. Be careful of double date issues and some missing information. [1]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Webb-4327 and Webb-1629 appear to represent the same person because: Same death place and date, same wife. Birth place needs to be checked out though.

You will find more detail comments on my James Webb page, for connections purposes this James Webb is listed as the son of John Webb (Jr.). When in fact this James Webb, of what was to be Letcher County KY., was actually John Jr.'s grandson. But I agree with Sandi Wiggins, the John Webb Jr. who married Mary (Boone) Webb, is the person represented in this profile. The Quaker records are quite clear on vital records for this couple and the children who remained Quakers.

With the rise to fame of grandsons Squire Boone Jr. and later Daniel Boone, many have forced links to this family. DNA has not cleared up this family either. I have links to those claiming descent from both James Crittendon Webb and James Franklin Webb. Neither are James Webb of Letcher County, KY.

The sources shown are for a John Webb in Virginia. John Webb that married Mary Boone, never left Pennsylvania. I believe you have confused 2 men by the same name.
