Arrival 1829 Canada
Obituary At the home of his daughter, Mrs. JI Wilson, in Rockford on October 10 at 630am, in the 87th year of age. Deceased was born in Woolidge, England, June 4, 1811 and was one of a family of eleven brothers and sisters. His oldest brother, Dr. Jamie Webb, a minister, died in California some few years ago, and one brother and a sister still live there. Mr. Webb received his education in the military academy near London, coming west with his parents to Canada at the age of eighteen. When twenty-one, he enlisted in the British service and served seven years. In 1838 he was married to Jenette Brodie, in Stanstead Plain, Lower Canada. Of this union, 13 children were born, five of whom are living to mourn his death. Jeanette and Charles of Rockford, Edward of Nebraska, George of Boone, Iowa, and Florence, of Iowa Falls, Iowa. Mr. Webb located here in 18?0, enduring the hardships of a pioneer life. In 1861, at the breaking out of the war, aroused with true patriotism, he drilled a company of young men in the sword exercise from which he derived the title of Captain. He enlisted in the 8th Illinois Cavalry, and served until 1863, when he was discharged on account of total disability, from which he never fully recovered. For over thirty years he lived on the same farm west of town which he bought when first coming here. Being of a friendly, social disposition, he made many friends who will remember him with kindness. In the summer of 86, he retired from farm life and has since made Byron his home. After the death of his wife in ’86 he made frequent visits to his children in the west. Grandpa Webb, as he was familiarly called, has been in failing health for some time, and his demise was not unexpected at any time. All that loving hands and willing hearts would do to comfort his last days was done. We can truly say he is at rest. Mr. Webb had been a member of the Congregational church many years, and always enjoyed the Sabbath School when his health would permit his going. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, a short service being held at the house in Rockford, when the friends followed the remains to Byron, where services were held in the Congregational church, after which he was laid to rest in Byron Cemetery.
