Biography

Richard August Webb was born around 1866 to Johannes Frederick Webb and Elizabeth Buck.[1]

When he was naturalised as an Australian citizen in 1914, he gave his occupation as baker and place of origin as Germany.[2][3]

He was married to Eliza Amelia Grace in 1892.[4] Their children were:

In the 1912 and 1913 electoral rolls Richard August Webb baker was living in Wyndham street, Shepparton with Eliza Amelia. Richard August Webb a baker was fined in Shepparton Court of Petty Sessions in April 1912, when underweight bread was found on his cart, but, on appeal, the case was dismissed with costs. [The Argus, 17 April 1912] Mr Charles Hancock purchased Mr R.A. Webb’s bakery business in Wyndham street and advertised in December 1914. [Shepparton Advertiser, 21 Dec 1914] In 1914 Richard August Webb, the holder of a Billiard Table License for the home and premises known at the Lyric Theatre, situate at Sydney road Brunswick to transfer the license to Herbert Henry North. [The Age, 21 Nov 1914]

Mr. J. W. Kline, baker, announces in this issue that he has disposed of his business to Mr. R. A. Webb. The latter gentleman has a business announcement in to-day's "Chronicle." [Camperdown Chronicle, 5 Jan 1915] In the 1915 to 1919 electoral rolls Richard August Webb baker lived in Manifold street Camperdown with Eliza Amelia and Russell Richard Webb pastrycook. In the 1922 electoral roll Richard August Webb pastrycook was living at 64 Glenferrie road, Malvern with Eliza Amelia and Doris Maud assistant.

In the 1924 electoral roll Richard August Webb cook was living in Kangaroo road, Oakleigh with Eliza Amelia. In 1931 Richard August Webb was a baker living in Springvale road, Springvale, with Eliza Emily, Emily Frances, and Roy a bread carter. “Of Much Concern. During Friday news came to Mr. Webb, our esteemed baker, that his horse, vehicle and driver, Keith .McKay, of Carlton road, had been washed down with the floods, at the Dandenong creek at Wellington road, and the intimation was urgently attended to by his employers’ family and police, but the raging waters could not be entered to ascertain what had resulted, and the worst was feared. It was a most worrying time up to Saturday, when it was found that the lad and horse were safe, but the cart was in the flood waters.. He was marooned for a couple of days, but arrived home safely” [The Dandenong Journal, 6 Dec 1934] In 1938 R.A.Webb in Springvale was advertising for a lad for bread delivery part time. [The Dandenong Journal, 18 Feb 1937]

Richard died on 2 April 1939 in Richmond, Victoria, Australia, aged 73 years.[1]

Death notice in The Argus 3 April 1939:

WEBB.—On the 2nd April 1939 at Bethesda private hospital Richard August late of Sprlngvale dearly beloved husband of Eliza Webb loving father of Russell, Freda (Mrs G T Keane), Gladys (Mrs. L W Scott), Doris (Mrs. D Martin), Roy and Charlie aged 73 years -Resting peacefully[5]

“The district will receive with great regret the news of the demise of Mr. Richard Webb, aged 73 years, on Sunday last, at a private hospital. Deceased was a resident for many years. He was a fine, man, righteous in all his undertakings, and philanthropic in his ways. Mr. Webb left the town three weeks ago to reside at Moonee Ponds. [The Dandenong Journal, 5 April 1939]
