Biography

Mary Elizabeth (Webb) Petty was a Tennessean.

Mary Elizabeth Webb was born March 12, 1856 in Tennessee to Isaac J. Webb and his wife, Martha Minerva Wilson, both of McMinn, Tennessee. Mary Elizabeth was born in Tennessee, but grew up just south of Lincoln County, Tennessee, in Madison County, Alabama, where her father worked as a carpenter. Mary Elizabeth was the first of three daughters, and she had three older brothers. At 3 years old she was their youngest when the census was taken there in 1860,^[1] and she was 13 and still living in Madison, Alabama in 1870.^[2]

Mary Elizabeth Webb married William Andrew "Buck" Petty around 1880. They had three children together, all sons.

In 1880 they were just starting out together in Madison County, Alabama.^[4] Her parents lived nearby.

In 1900 she and Buck were counted in Precinct 2, New Market, Madison, Alabama, with all three of their sons, and her widowed mother was living with them.^[5] By 1910 they had moved just north of Madison to Civil District 21, Lincoln, Tennessee. Only George remained at home with them.^[6]

In 1930 they were still in Lincoln County and living with their middle son, George. There was a niece (John William's daughter?) listed with them as well.^[7] George was killed later that same year.^[8][9]

Mary Elizabeth Webb Petty died in Lincoln County, Tennessee, on December 24, 1932. ^[10]
