Biography

Private James Webb served in the East Tennessee Militia in the War of 1812
Service started: Sept 20, 1814
Unit(s):
Service ended: Feb 9, 1815

James Webb was born sometimes between 1784 and 1794[1]. In the 1810 census, he is listed under the name James Web Roach and living next door to his probable father, John Web Roach, and probable brother, Larkin Web Roach[1].

On 7 June 1810[2], James married Rachel Partin[3] in Grainger County, Tennessee[2]. In a pension application, Rachel lists her 3 children with James as:

  1. Preston Webb, born about 1808[4]
  2. Polly Webb, born about 1810[4]
  3. John Webb, born about 1812[4]

In the pension file, Rachel states that James was drafted into Captain Powell's Company of the East Tennessee Militia in the War of 1812 on 20 September 1814[5], and that he died in Mobile, Alabama (then the Mississippi Territory), on either the 9th or 19th (she differed on the date in different statements for the pension) of February, 1814 or 1815[5]. Based on the history of the 3rd Regiment of the East Tennessee Militia, which was active from September 1814 to May 1815[6], presumably the year 1815 is correct rather than 1814. On 16 May 1815, the Grainger County Court minutes record that Rachel was given leave to administer the estate of James Webb, deceased, with John R. Webb giving bond[7].

Confusingly, there are other younger children (Rachel's children?) born after 1814 living with Rachel in later censuses that some researchers have assumed to be those of James Webb, but given his 1815 death date and her unambiguous list of only 3 children with James in the pension file, any other children of Rachel's clearly had a different father (see Rachel's profile for more detail).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

The merge of James Webb and James Roach Webb seem suspect for birthplaces are different. the fact that the spouses are the same may not be true. Wrong placement of spouses.
