Biography

Ann Webster is only estimated to have been born about 1680 at Old Rappahannock, Virginia.[1] [2][3]She was a daughter of Henry Webster and his wife Charity.[1] Her relationship to parents is proven by the following Richmond County deed from Charity Webster dated February 1698.

Know all men by these presents that I Charity Webster of County of Richmond for love & true affections I bare unto my Daughter Ann Webster do hereby give and bequeath unto her the said Ann Webster one black Cow with a Crop & two Slitts in the left ere & a Crop and Slitt in the right Eare with all her future increase from me my heirs to her & heirs forever Witness my hand & seal this 11th day Febr'y 1697/8

Family

Ann married Lewis Pugh.[5] The couple made their home in Farnham Parish in Richmond County, Virginia on a branch of Totuskey Creek. This land was near land that had been purchased by Ann's apparent brother, Henry Webster. Lewis bought 50 acres on which they resided from John Branham in 1720.[6]

Ann was widowed prior to 1740 when she gave a deposition at Richmond County Court. She stated her husband had received intelligence from his brother-in-law of North Wales indicating his father David Pugh had died leaving him an estate. She further stated Lewis and their son John had sailed out of the Rappahannock in route to Liverpool in April 1731 and she'd lately received intelligence her husband was dead in South Wales. She requested a Power of Attorney be granted to their son David Pugh in order for him to go settle his father's estate in Wales.[7][8]

She additionally provided the names & spouses of her children:

  • John Pugh, sailed to Liverpool with his father in 1731.
  • David Pugh, of Lancaster, VA, was given P.O.A. from mother Ann & his siblings 1 Sept 1740.

Lewis Pugh witnessed the 1725 will of Elizabeth Webster, widow of the Henry Webster who died in Richmond County in January of 1720/21 (Ann's brother).
