James Henry Weeden was born about Feb 1838 in Moe, Passaic, New Jersey. He was the son of John M. Weeden and Sarah Jane Montross.
His father died in early 1840, and in the 1840 Census, he was living with his widowed mother and siblings in West Milford, Passaic, New Jersey.[1] In 1850, he was living with his uncle Cornelius Montross and family (his remarried mother and two siblings had moved to Warwick, Orange, New York).[2]
At the age of 22, James married Catherine E. Sanford on March 1, 1860, in Sparta, Sussex, New Jersey, when she was 24.[3][4] They had three children - Ira Henry, Sarah J., and James Enoch.
In July 1863, James registered for the Civil War draft in Warwick, Orange, New York, where he listed his occupation as mechanic.[5]
From 1870 to 1880, James and Catherine lived with children in Warwick, Orange, New York, where James worked as a tinsmith.[6][7][8] An 1882 article in the local paper noted "County and Vicinity, Sugar Loaf Items--Mr. James H. Weeden of Warwick, has put on about two thousand square feet of tin roofing in and about this village during the past two years. He does a good job."[9]
Soon thereafter, the family relocated, and in 1885, James and Catherine and children and her father were living in Greenwood, Passaic, New Jersey (next door to two of his Montross uncles and their families).[10] In 1905 and 1910, the couple was farming in West Milford, Passaic, New Jersey, joined in 1910 by their widowed daughter-in-law and grandson.[11][12]
James died at the home of his daughter, Sarah Slater, on 8 Aug 1930 in Belmar, Monmouth, New Jersey.[13] He was buried at Warwick Cemetery in Warwick, Orange, New York.[14]
