Biography

Fred Weiss, proprietor of the Clover Leaf Cheese Factory in Section 25, Turtle Lake Township, Barron County, Wisconsin, was born April 22, 1877 in Berne, Switzerland, son of John and Anna (Fechtar) Weiss, farmers in that locality. In 1882, at the age of five years, his parents emigrated to the United States and settled on a farm in Green County, Wisconsin. Fred grew to manhood on the farm, but had little opportunity for schooling as he was needed on the farm. At fourteen years of age, Fred he begin to learn the cheese making trade and at the age of nineteen years became the owner and operator of a factory in Green County. He prospered and made two trips back to his native country. On one of the trips he married Emma Steiner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Steiner, and brought her back to Green County. Emma died June 12, 1911, leaving four children: Fred, born Oct. 12, 1902, who lived in Dodge County, Wisconsin; Frieda, born April 16, 1903; Rosa, born March 20, 1906; and Edward, born April 14, 1904. In 1914, Fred bought the Clover Leaf Cheese Factory, added a house onto the building and there he and his family made their residence. Fred's second marriage was to Elizabeth Dietrich, born Jan. 23, 1896, daughter of Casper and Mary Dietrich of Turtle Lake Township. Their one child was Raymond, born Oct. 7, 1919. The family attended the Silver Lake congregation of the German Lutheran Church. [1]
