Biography

by 6th great grandaughter Grace McChesney Boerner, 2015

Mary (Welch) Chesney has Irish ancestors.

Other than matching Mary Ann Welch and William Chesney's DNA with that of son Samuel Chesney, we have only circumstantial evidence at this time of the elusive Mary Anne Welch Chesney, daughter of Unknown Welch, wife of William Chesney and mother of Samuel Chesney/McChesney. I have no DNA evidence tha Mary Ann is the mother of any of William Chesney's other children. The one "evidence" is Ancestry trees, but they have conflicting information, and their only source is other Ancestry trees which also have no original source files.

We can only look at the circumstances and make "educated" guesses at best. So, bear with me as we play out the possible scenarios of her birth, marriage, being the mother of William McChesney's children, and her eventual death:

Scenario 1:' Mary Ann Welch was born and married in Ireland.[1] Ireland as thought to be the birthplace of their first son, Samuel Chesney. However the date of Samuel's birth of 1705 seems incorrect. Mary Ann Welch (if she was born in 1696 as Ancestry trees tell us) would have only been 9 years old. [2] Then there is a span of 9 years before their second child, Isabell Chesney is born in 1714 in Pennsylvania.

Scenario 2:' Mary Ann Welch was born and married in Pennsylvania.[3] Some place Mary Ann's birthplace along with their marriage to be in Pennsylvania. This assumption most likely made by the birth of Isabella Chesney in 1714 in Pennsylvania Colony. Let's explore this idea. There were families with the surname Welch living in Colonial Pennsylvania in the late 1600s and 1700s.[4] So this is a possibility. However, that would make son Samuel's birth to be Pennsylvania and not Ireland. We simply do not have enough evidence to say either way. We do know that daughter Isabel Chesney thought to be born in Pennsylvania and married in Pennsylvania.[5]. ... to be continued.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

I have added birth and dearh locations for Mary Ann(e) Welch, but cannot add the death date I have of 1757, due to son John's birth date entered here as 1760. My only source is Family Search.
